As we did in 2015 and 2016, we have decided to run an intramural competition after the standard FTC season has ended. This year, we started a new FTC team - team 11285, so we now have two teams in our club. Because the number of regular robots has doubled, it seems fitting that the number of intramural robots should double as well! For this reason, we have created four teams for this competition.
As with the last two years, we are trying to reuse field elements from previous games, both to help keep costs down and to provide realistic challenges for the students. This year, we are using:
During the standard FTC season, we observed that both of our teams had mastered pressing the small buttons on the beacons, so we wanted to use the color-detection aspect of the beacons but not allow them to use the buttons. Instead, the beacons will be modified to respond to a wiffle ball breaking a beam for the appropriate color (red or blue). Additionally, to reduce the number of field elements, there are only two baskets in use for this game, which are mounted on pieces of wood. The baskets are motorized so that when 5 wiffle balls are placed in them, they dump the wiffle balls back onto the field - this is why this game is called "Spin Off." Today was kickoff, so we presented the game and answered questions. The students were split into their four teams, which they called “Freedom Fries Strike Back” (Captain: Trevor), “Slap Nut Axis” (Captain: Kian), “Ark” (Captain: Noah), and “DANK JR” (Captain: Jay).
